Getting to South Shields without a car

Metro (Tyne and Wear Metro, Nexus)

South Shields is the end of the Metro's Yellow line. The station is in the town centre (Keppel Street, NE33 1AA), with a bus interchange and taxi rank. Newcastle Central is about 27 minutes away. There is step-free access to the platform. (Travel North East (Nexus): South Shields Metro station; checked 3 Nov 2026)

In the daytime, trains run roughly every 12 minutes Monday to Saturday and every 15 minutes on Sundays, going by the published timetable. (Travel North East (Nexus): South Shields Metro station; checked 3 Nov 2026)

Still being confirmed: Metro fares and day tickets: Check Travel North East (Nexus): South Shields Metro station.

Trains (National Rail)

If you're coming by mainline train, change to the Metro at Newcastle Central (about 27 minutes to South Shields). (Travel North East (Nexus): South Shields Metro station; checked 3 Nov 2026)

Shields Ferry

The ferry crosses the Tyne between North and South Shields in about 7 minutes. Boats leave South Shields at quarter past and quarter to the hour. (Travel North East (Nexus): Shields Ferry timetable; checked 3 Nov 2026) Full times are on The Shields Ferry page.

Buses

Buses meet the Metro at the town-centre interchange. (Travel North East (Nexus): South Shields Metro station; checked 3 Nov 2026) The E1 bus runs out to the Grotto at Marsden: a council walking group uses it to start a walk there. (Shields Gazette, 3 Nov 2026: wellbeing walk; checked 3 Nov 2026)

Diversion: the River Drive bridge (Heugh Street) has been closed since 13 November 2025 until further notice, so routes 10, 12, 50 and E1 are diverted. Nexus advises using South Shields Interchange (12 and E1) or Ocean Road (E1 only) instead. (Travel North East (Nexus): Travel updates; checked 4 Nov 2026)

Still being confirmed: Bus routes and times to the seafront, Marsden and Souter: use the journey planner. Check Travel North East journey planner.

Use the official Travel North East journey planner for live times. (Travel North East journey planner; checked 3 Nov 2026)
