Arbeia's candlelit tours return while the fort is shut for winter

Fri 30 Oct 2026 · Written for Visit South Shields from the sources below.

Arbeia, the Roman fort in the middle of South Shields, is closed to the public until spring 2027. Only pre-booked school and group visits are allowed, plus one special evening. (Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort (North East Museums); North East Museums: Visit Arbeia; checked 3 Nov 2026)

That evening is Saturday 12 December, when the fort runs Candlelit Tours at 4:30pm and 6pm. Each lasts about an hour. Tickets are £12, which includes a £2 voluntary donation. The tours are for ages 12 and over and must be booked in advance. Update, 4 Nov 2026: both sessions are now listed as sold out on the museum's page. When the fort reopens, entry is normally free. It's on Baring Street, about a 14-minute walk from the transport interchange. (North East Museums: Visit Arbeia; checked 3 Nov 2026)
