If you're coming to South Shields for Remembrance Sunday (8 November) or Armistice Day (Wednesday 11 November), there are a few travel changes worth knowing about.

Free Stagecoach buses for the Armed Forces community

Stagecoach is letting members of the Armed Forces community travel free on its buses all day on both 8 and 11 November. That covers serving personnel and Reserves in uniform or carrying military ID, cadets in uniform, and veterans wearing medals, a veteran's badge or other recognised insignia. Show these to the driver when you get on. The offer doesn't apply to Megabus. Metro on Sunday morning

Network Rail work means no Metro trains between Pelaw and South Hylton until about 11:30am on Sunday 8 November. Replacement bus 901 runs between Heworth and South Hylton, calling at all stations. A revised timetable also runs on the Yellow line between South Shields and St James that morning, so look up your train before you set off. The two-minute silence

At 11am on both days, Metro trains already at a station will wait at the platform for the silence. Trains between stations carry on to the next stop first. (Travel North East (Nexus): Travel updates; checked 4 Nov 2026)

In town: the South Shields parade forms up on Beach Road at 10:15am on Sunday, with rolling road closures on parts of Beach Road and Westoe Road from about 10am to noon. Times are in our Remembrance Sunday guide. (South Tyneside Council: Remembrance services; checked 3 Nov 2026)
