Derelict Water's Edge pub at Trow Lea to become four homes

South Tyneside councillors have approved plans to turn the former Water's Edge pub at Trow Lea, on the seafront, into four houses. The planning committee's vote on 20 October was unanimous. (Shields Gazette, 21 Oct 2026: Water's Edge plans approved; checked 3 Nov 2026)
About 30 members of the public objected. Their concerns included losing a pub, privacy for people on the beach, extra lighting, parking, the effect on the coastal landscape, and setting a precedent for more building on the foreshore. Council planners told the committee the pub had been closed since 2017 and had fallen into disrepair, and that homes would improve how that stretch of coast looks. The application was first lodged in 2023. An earlier scheme for an apartment block on the site was refused about eight years ago, and that refusal was upheld on appeal. No timetable for building work was given in the report we read.
